A pitch earns attention when it respects the reporter’s problem: finding something accurate, timely, and useful for a specific audience. Start with relevance. Connect your news to a live conversation, a seasonal moment, or a tension your audience already feels. Make the subject clear in the first line, then show why it matters now. Offer substance rather than adjectives. A concrete number, a named expert, a document, or a first-hand account gives the story a spine. Keep the structure short: angle, evidence, availability, and next step. Personalize without performing research for its own sake; show that you understand the beat and the outlet’s format. Be honest about limits. If the story is narrow, say who it serves. If timing is tight, explain the reason. End with an easy response path and a promise to follow through. What subject lines earn your own clicks, and what makes you archive a pitch immediately?
